Paige dropped her clothes and let them land in chaos on the floor. She didnât care. Fatigue gnawed at her body. She crawled beneath the sheets, punched her pillow, and laid her head down. She turned on her back. Her eyes popped open. She stared at the dark ceiling. She turned on her left side. Finally, she grabbed the remote and flipped on the TV.
She turned the sound down before she saw the two cops sheâd seen the other day on the news and turned it back up. The young female reporter asked several uninspired questions until one grabbed Paigeâs interest.
âAn inside source claimed the women were beaten with a pipe or a baseball bat. Can you confirm that for me?â the pretty blonde asked.
âWe donât give out that type of information with an ongoing case. Care to name your inside source?â The older man looked upset with the reporter.
âYou know I canât do that.â
âWe canât discuss an ongoing case.â The detective turned to leave.
The news anchor came on and announced they were looking for anyone who might have witnessed the dead prostitutes in the last few days. The woman gave the telephone number to call if someone had information.
She reached for her cell and dialed the number.
After several rings, a manâs voice answered, gruff and tired. For a second she went blank. This is a terrible idea. She hung up.
A few seconds later, her phone rang. She answered it.
âWhat the hell do you want? And donât hang up. If youâre afraidââ the same voice from before said.
âIâm not afraid. More like, I realized this is a stupid idea,â she interrupted.
âLook, I havenât got time for games. Do you know something about the case or not?â
âI donât, but the one Iâm working on has a similar MO. I questioned whether theyâre related in some way.â
âAnd howâs that?â he said
âMy guy uses a bat,â she said.
âWho the hell are you, and what case are you working?â
âIâm Detective Paige Stone from Tulsa PD. Iâm out here to consult on a case where the victim was clubbed with a bat. Itâs a long story, but I figured we could benefit if we meet and compare notes. Are you opposed to such an idea?â
âWhy does your name sound familiar, and why would you consult with the police on a case out here?â
Shit.
âYou might have heard about me, but not because I did anything special. I helped to take down Grant Windsor a few months back, and I need to be honest with you. I donât work with the police department on this case. Itâs a favor for a friend.â She waited for his reaction.
âI donât know many open cases where the perp used a bat or pipe to beat someone to death. I only know about one and the victim is male. My guyâs only interested in female prostitutes.â
âI understand, but if I could see your photos of the victimsââ She decided to back pedal. âI donât know, it seemed strange to me within twenty-four hours of my murder, your guy started.
